Street Photography

Ok so as far as I know there isn't going to be a dance or formal or whatever but I really think this picture is a lot like a dance here at Southwestern. People are dressed up and it looks like there may be some drama or tension in this picture just like southwestern!!







So since I won't be able to take a pic of a dance soon then this picture relates to students and faculty in the halls or even out at the bus circle after school. This picture is really weird and I'm sure you could get just as weird here at school.

Environmental Portrait

1] what specifically is the purpose of heisler's photographs? is it simply vanity-driven or does it perform a deeper function?
-I think it performs a deeper function because even though the portrait is set up it still provides an explanation as to what the person is like.

2] as many of heisler's photos are made for specific stories or magazine covers they have a specific look, but are they fundementally different from gordon parks' "american gothic"?
-no they are not that different because gordon parks posed that woman in american gothic just like heisler poses his photos.

3] pick the portrait of the actor hugh grant from the prophoto.com website and critique it for content, purpose, and effectiveness.
-In the picture you see a man, a restaurant, coffee, silverware, etc. The purpose of this photo isn't really clear to me to be honest. I don't know what the effectiveness of this photo is but I'm sure it would make sense with that magazine story with it.

American Gothic

Okay so heres my thoughts about American Gothic:

1] what you see in the photograph [simple and objective]
A black woman holding a broom and a mop. A huge American flag. The woman is wearing glasses and a button down uniform.

2] what the photo looks like its saying to you [your initial analysis]
The woman is tired and sad. Shes sick of cleaning.

3] comparisons and contrasts to grant wood's "american gothic"
Ok, Grant Woods "American Gothic" shows a man and a woman, possibly father and daughter, in front of a nice house and farm. The man is holding a pitchfork. The two people are also white.

4] what you think the the photograph really means [your interpretation]
I think the photograph is trying to show that minorities can never really get the american dream they are there for. They are always stuck at the bottom because of prejudice that exsisted.

5] whether or not you think that it is a successful photograph
Yes I think this is a successful photograph.
