THE END. (cont.)
1. This is a portrait of my wonderful friend Tabby. This is a good example of portraiture because she is in a posed position in a studio with lighting and backdrops. I think this is a strong image overall because it's a great pose with a lot of emotion. It's developed good however, I think the lighting should have been different to lighten up her face some.
2. This is one of my documentary pictures. My son was taking his pants off and he couldn't get them off his foot so he was trying to get me to pick him up while I was taking this picture. This is a good example of documentary because it's life as it's happening. This is my life 24/7. I think this is a great print, good quality, except for the black dots, I don't know what those are. Anyway, I think it really shows action and a part of my life that's very important to me.
3. Here is another example of documentary. You may think this is posed but trust me, my brother ALWAYS acts like this. Yes, sadly, this is my brother. This is how he is all the time and it's a great snapshot at the right time. I think this is a really good print with good lighting and I like this picture a lot.
4. This is another portrait of Tabby. It's posed, and it's not the most unique pose ever but it represents her well so that's all that matters to me. Lighting is pretty good I think and it's a good print. This is a strong picture because I can totally see Tabby in this all the way.
5. This is actually one of my documentary pictures but I believe it could be still life in a way. The phone was being pulled by my son but the shoes are there just chillin, being still so it's still life to me. I didn't have many still life pictures to choose from so I don't think this is a really good example honestly but what can I do? At least it's a good print.
6. This is another still life picture I picked out. Once again, not a very good example but everything in the picture is still and not moving so it can count right? I think this a really cool picture, a little bright, I could have printed it better but I personally like it a lot. I also think this a strong image overall because this is the science wing and this is how it ALWAYS looks. This is probably the only time I've been in the science wing this year, was to take this picture. It's always lonely and quiet. So this represents the science wing well.
7. This is another documentary picture. My family. We have four new babies in my family within the last year and still waiting on the fifth. My aunt is changing her babies diaper while my gram is just watching t.v. or something. This is a great example of documentary, just life how it is for me and my family. It shows that motherhood is in my life A LOT whether it's me being the mom or someone else in my family. I like it though.
THE END.
Here is what I've learned so far:
*Aperture- an opening such as a hole, slit, crack, gap, etc. that limits the quantity of light that can enter an optical instrument.
*Shutter- a mechanical device for opening and closing the aperture of a camera lens to expose film.
*Burning Dodging- manipulate the exposure of a selected area on a photographic print, deviating from the rest of the images exposure
*Under-exposure- a photographic negative or print that is imperfect because of insufficient exposure.
*Rembrandt Lighting- light is hitting the side of the face that is facing the camera. This creates the affect of a triangle under the the eye.
The picture above is an example of Rembrandt lighting. Jer's left side of the face is well lit and his right side is shadowed. The aperture of the camera is probably open a bit and the shutter speed if fairly low. This is because the lighting is good and the aperture is open so a lot of light is being let into the camera which means the shutter speed doesn't need to be long or else the picture would be darker.

Photographer Research
Mark Seliger is a famous photographer who was born in Amarillo, Texas in 1959. He began photographing in high school at a visual arts high school in Houston. Later on he started taking pictures of the Rolling Stones. Later he began taking pictures of bigger celebrities in a contemporary style. He is famous for his studio in an empty elevator shaft. He feels that photographing people against the brick wall in his studio reveals deeper elements of themselves. He has had major contributions that include several books like “When They Came to Take My Father” and “In My Stairwell”. He has also co-directed music videos, commercials, and short films. And has won several awards. His influences include; Deborah Feingold, Jan Groover, and George Hurrel who are photographers who he assisted. Critics name him as a “well ordered and directed” man. We conclude that Mark Seliger is a good photographer and the fact that he can use such a little studio and still come out with amazing pictures.

Street Photography
Ok so as far as I know there isn't going to be a dance or formal or whatever but I really think this picture is a lot like a dance here at Southwestern. People are dressed up and it looks like there may be some drama or tension in this picture just like southwestern!!
So since I won't be able to take a pic of a dance soon then this picture relates to students and faculty in the halls or even out at the bus circle after school. This picture is really weird and I'm sure you could get just as weird here at school.

Environmental Portrait
1] what specifically is the purpose of heisler's photographs? is it simply vanity-driven or does it perform a deeper function?
-I think it performs a deeper function because even though the portrait is set up it still provides an explanation as to what the person is like.
2] as many of heisler's photos are made for specific stories or magazine covers they have a specific look, but are they fundementally different from gordon parks' "american gothic"?
-no they are not that different because gordon parks posed that woman in american gothic just like heisler poses his photos.
3] pick the portrait of the actor hugh grant from the prophoto.com website and critique it for content, purpose, and effectiveness.
-In the picture you see a man, a restaurant, coffee, silverware, etc. The purpose of this photo isn't really clear to me to be honest. I don't know what the effectiveness of this photo is but I'm sure it would make sense with that magazine story with it.

American Gothic
Okay so heres my thoughts about American Gothic:
1] what you see in the photograph [simple and objective]
A black woman holding a broom and a mop. A huge American flag. The woman is wearing glasses and a button down uniform.
2] what the photo looks like its saying to you [your initial analysis]
The woman is tired and sad. Shes sick of cleaning.
3] comparisons and contrasts to grant wood's "american gothic"
Ok, Grant Woods "American Gothic" shows a man and a woman, possibly father and daughter, in front of a nice house and farm. The man is holding a pitchfork. The two people are also white.
4] what you think the the photograph really means [your interpretation]
I think the photograph is trying to show that minorities can never really get the american dream they are there for. They are always stuck at the bottom because of prejudice that exsisted.
5] whether or not you think that it is a successful photograph1] what you see in the photograph [simple and objective]

Yes I think this is a successful photograph.

Robert Frank
This is a picture of a graduation by Robert Frank. I like the photo but I don't really like what the picture portrays. It seems to me that the man on the bench is bored and unhappy. Graduation is like one of the most important times in a person's life and I just wish this photo showed more happiness and success. But then again maybe this guy didn't graduate himself or something so he's depressed. Or maybe he's just simply waiting. Who knows but even the faces of the graduates aren't happy and excited so I think theres more to this picture then what is shown.
